EVENT DESCRIPTION:
WORKING WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS IN THE COMMUNITY "Why Won't They Stop?: Understanding the Culture of Addiction" and "Ethical Dilemmas in Offender Treatment PRESENTER:
THOMAS DILLINGHAM, JR., MS, LICDC, Supervisor, Fatherhood Project at Talbert House

PROGRAM SYNOPSIS
WHY WON"T THEY STOP?: UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE OF ADDICTION (9 a.m.12:15 p.m.) Why won't they stop is a common question one hears in discussions regarding substance use disorders, and it is the challenge for the community corrections professionals and treatment providers that work with this population. The morning session will focus on the culture of addiction and why people who are addicted can't just stop using. The training will address a variety of etiologies, treatment modalities, and culture considerations in effective treatment

ETHICAL DILEMMAS IN OFFENDER TREATMENT (1 p.m.- 4:15 p.m.) Ethical concerns that can lead to unethical behaviors are an overwhelming concern in the criminal justice system and addiction treatment. This session will focus on defining ethical dilemmas, describe ethical principles for treatment professionals, and identify tools of decision making to assist with ethical dilemmas
These sessions are appropriate for community corrections, criminal justice and behavioral health professionals who are interested in cognitive therapy and intervention with the community corrections and criminal-justice involved populations.
